Possible assassination attempt at Trump rally; shooter dead, DA says
On Saturday, July 13, 2024, a disturbing incident occurred during a rally held by former President Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania. As Trump was delivering his speech, he was suddenly swarmed by Secret Service agents and rushed off the stage amid reports of possible gunshots.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that there appeared to be blood on Trump's right ear as he was being led away, and he was seen mouthing the word "fight" and pumping his fist. A spokesperson for the former president stated that Trump was taken to a local medical facility for examination and that he "thanks law enforcement and first responders for their quick action during this heinous act."
According to Butler County District Attorney Richard A. Goldinger, a shooter is confirmed to be dead, and at least one bystander is also confirmed dead, with the possibility of a second bystander fatality. Officials briefed on the situation are investigating the incident as a potential assassination attempt, stating that the live rounds were fired from outside the security perimeter.
Donald Trump Jr. spoke with his father, who he said remains at the hospital in "good spirits" and is "never gonna stop." Dave McCormick, a U.S. Senate candidate who was attending the rally, reported hearing "seven or eight" shots fired, causing the crowd to panic and drop to the ground.
The Secret Service has stated that they have "implemented protective measures" and that the former president is safe, while also indicating that this is an "active Secret Service investigation" with further information to be released as it becomes available.
In the aftermath of the incident, political leaders from both sides of the aisle have condemned the violence and expressed their support and prayers for Trump and those affected. Pennsylvania Democratic Governor Josh Shapiro called the violence "absolutely unacceptable," while Republican Senators J.D. Vance and Marco Rubio, along with North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, have all taken to social media to call for prayers for the former president and those in attendance.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has also responded to the scene, stating that this is a "top priority" for the agency as they assist the Secret Service and other law enforcement partners in the ongoing investigation.
As the nation grapples with this troubling event, it is clear that the safety and security of political leaders and their supporters must remain a paramount concern for all Americans, regardless of their political affiliation. The pursuit of justice and the preservation of democratic norms will be crucial in the days and weeks ahead.
